BLUEHAZE® Dismantler series is a suite of electronic gaming controllers specially designed to complement the work and needs of the women, men, and children working at informal electronic waste recycling sites. The project challenges existing industrial design models and provokes the field to expand boundaries beyond designing for consumers. BLUEHAZE® embraces the human group involved in recycling as the ultimate end user and, moreover, incorporates dismantling strategies into the design thinking process.

Plannar is a shared AR approach to community visioning that privileges the perspectives of long-term, low-income immigrant residents of Chinatown in Los Angeles. Residents can create photos of their own preferred visions of future urban development by placing and liking virtual object overlays around the neighborhood. In tandem with everyday life and traditional community outreach strategies, this community-led platform engages residents with interactive simulations from multiple perspectives, over time, and with others..

Implicit Space uses virtual reality(VR) to explore private augmented reality(AR) interactions in public. This project presents examples of AR content that meets social etiquette and uses body movements to categorize and visualize how other people recognize our space usage in public. This set of design guidelines builds courteous communication between individuals and helps avoid space conflict.

Algorithm Jamplifying imagines and develops new behavior and aesthetics evolving in Chinese pop culture. Users and cultural producers adopt A.I. algorithms as a new way to generate memes, videos, and aesthetics. By facilitating this collaboration with A.I., users are able to exert control over their presence on social platforms and create content that amplifies their desires, values, and creativity.

Rules for Breaking Rules is a 12-month, people-centered practice based in Mexico City, Mexico. Operating both inside and outside of institutions, it looks critically at the existing paradigmatic models of social participation embedded in art, design and urban systems. It produced playful public programs and installations in museums, universities and public spaces to realign hierarchy and agency.

Body in Motion proposes a motion interface that engages full-body movements inspired by badminton and hip-hop dance. These expressive and joyful movements create kinesthetic and sensual experiences opposite to hand-driven universal design for immersive future. The fully embodied interface inspires bodily motion, physical pleasure, and a more physically active and emotionally positive lifestyle.

What If Your Kitchen Knows is a proposition that highlights the journey of kitchen appliances in an alternative domestic landscape, which challenges human prescribed usage. By speculating a new relationship between people, devices, and natural environment, this project explores the possibility of animate analog exchange between the participants instead of a binary digital interaction within an Internet of Things ecosystem.

Performative Knowing proposes acknowledging and accounting for humans’ active role in constructing and performing their ontological knowledge of their ubicomp surroundings. A simulated ubicomp stage is designed as an investigative tool to explore how participants gradually generate mental models based on their relationality with the stage, their interpreted contextual significance, and situated values. Participants and the designer co-create a series of scripted performances and physical props as a container to carry and enact that situated meaning and knowledge in the individual’s body movements, spaces, and contexts to allow for the continuous construction and reconstruction of knowing. This project focuses on exploring the various constitutive conversations humans could build with a complex ubicomp system, not for utility but for a knowing that creates a consistently engaged future navigation.
